Use of Was and Were

Hello Friends,

Today, we will learn about the use of "Was and Were". "Was and Were" is used for the past tense.

आज, हम "Was and Were" के use के बारे में जानेंगे। "Was and Were" भूत काल के लिए प्रयोग किया जाता है

Like: -

Rohit was an idiot boy.
रोहित एक बेवकूफ लड़का था।
You were a great poet.
आप एक महान कवि थे।
I was ill yesterday.
मैं कल बीमार था।

The sentences given above are past tense sentences because was, were is used in these sentences.

ऊपर दिए गए वाक्य भूत काल के वाक्य हैं (क्योंकि was, were) का उपयोग इन वाक्यों में किया गया है।

Hindi meaning of Was, Were -( था / थी , थे )
Was, Were का हिंदी अर्थ होता है - ( था / थी , थे )

Was, Were is used according to the subject, if the subject is singular then "Was" is used if the subject is plural then "Were" is used.
Was,Were का उपयोग कर्ता (Subject) के अनुसार किया जाता है, यदि Subject एकवचन है तो "Was" का उपयोग किया जाता है यदि Subject बहुवचन है तो "Were का उपयोग किया जाता है।

Note- He, She,This,That, It or the name of any person, things, place and animal is singular and These, Those, You, We, They are plural subject.
नोट- वह, वह, यह, वह, यह या किसी भी व्यक्ति, वस्तु, स्थान और पशु का नाम एकवचन है और ये, वो, आप, हम, वे बहुवचन विषय हैं।

Examples:-

He was my enemy.
वह मेरा दुश्मन था
This was very useful thing.
यह बहुत उपयोगी चीज थी।
She was a nurse before.
वह पहले एक नर्स थी।

"He, She, This" are Singular Subjects, so "Was" is used in the above sentences.

"He,She,This" एकवचन Subjects हैं इसलिए ऊपर दिए गए वाक्यों में "Was" का प्रयोग हुआ है !

Examples:-

I was troubled before.
मैं पहले परेशान था।
I was at work yesterday.
मैं कल काम पर था ।

"I" is also the singular subject and "Was" is used with it.

"I" भी एकवचन Subject है और इसके साथ "Was" का उपयोग किया जाता है!

Examples:-

These were for you.
ये आपके लिए थे।
We were honest.
हम ईमानदार थे।
They were Punjabi people.
वे पंजाबी लोग थे।

"These, We, They" are plural subjects, so "Were" is used in the above sentences.
"These, We,They" बहुवचन Subjects हैं इसलिए ऊपर दिए गए वाक्यों में "Were" का प्रयोग हुआ है !

Rules of Was and Were

Guys, there are six rules for translating Hindi sentences into English which are as follows.

Guys, Hindi वाक्यों को अंग्रेजी में अनुवाद करने के छह नियम हैं जो इस प्रकार हैं।

1).Rules of Simple Sentences

रोहित सभ्य लड़का था।

(Subject + Helping Verb + object + .)
(Rohit + was + decent boy + .)

Rohit was decent boy.

Examples:-

वह एक अनुभवी प्रिंसिपल थे।
He was an experienced principal.
रोमियो एक बेईमान व्यक्ति था।
Romio was a dishonest person.
सिकंदर एक महान योद्धा था।
Sikandar was a great warrior.
केले सड़े हुए थे।
Bananas were rotten.
मेरे माता-पिता बहुत खुश थे।
My parents were very happy.
मैं देश से बाहर था।
I was out of the country.

2).Rules of Negative Sentences

रीमा स्टेशन पर नहीं थी।

(Subj + H-Verb + not + object + .)
(Reema + was + not + at station + .)

Reema was not at station.

Examples:-

आप बस में नहीं थे।
You were not in the bus.
हम स्वार्थी नहीं थे।
We were not selfish.
मैं मूर्ख नहीं था।
I was not foolish.
ये पके आम नहीं थे।
These were not ripe mangoes.
वह मेरी बहन नहीं थी ।
She was not my sister.
मैं आज निराश नहीं था।
I was not disappointed today.

3).Rules of Interrogative Sentences

क्या वह मंगलवार को अमेरिका में था?

(Helping Verb + Subject + object + ?)
(Was + he + in america on Tuesday + ?)

Was he in america on Tuesday?

Examples:-

क्या आप कार के पीछे थे?
Were you behind the car ?
क्या वह कॉलेज में थी?
Was she in the college?
क्या मैं बेहोश था ?
Was I unconscious?
क्या आप रसोई में थे?
Were you in the kitchen ?
क्या T.V चालू था?
Was T.V switched on ?
क्या वह आपकी माँ थी ?
Was she your mother ?

4).Rules of Interrogative + Negative Sentences

क्या वह चालाक नहीं था?

(H-Verb Verb + Subject + Not + object + ?)
(Was + he + not + cunning +?)

Was he not cunning ?

Examples:-

क्या आप बस-स्टैंड पर नहीं थे?
Were you not at the bus-stand?
क्या यह दिलचस्प कहानी नहीं थी?
Was it not interesting story?
क्या मैं कल दुखी नहीं था?
Was I not sad yesterday?
कारखाने में मजदूर नहीं थे?
Were workers not in factory?
क्या वह स्वस्थ नहीं था?
Was he not healthy?

5).Rules of Wh-family + Interrogative Sentences

मेरा बैग कहाँ था?

(Wh-family+Helping Verb + Subject + object + ?)
(Where + was + my bag + ?)

Where was my bag?

Examples:-

तुम कहाँ थे ?
Where were you?
आपका जन्मदिन कब था?
When was your birthday?
यह किसका कार्य था?
Whose task was this?
उसका स्वास्थ्य कैसा था?
How was his health?

6).Rules of Wh-family + Interrogative + Negative Sentences

वह बुद्धिमान क्यों नहीं थे?

(Wh-family+Helping Verb + Subject + Not + object + ?)
(Why + was + he + not + wise ?)

Why was he not wise?

Examples:-

तुम स्कूल में क्यों नहीं थे?
Why were you not in the school?
वह कल खुश क्यों नहीं थी?
Why was she not happy yesterday?
यह कैसे संभव नहीं था?
How was this not possible?
श्रमिक कारखाने में क्यों नहीं थे?
Why were workers not in factory?
